Helen, Nurse Specialist

My name is Helen, and I'm one of the Nurse Specialists based here at the Hospice in Brentry. I answer the 24-hour clinical Advice Line, a non-emergency phone line for patients with life-limiting illnesses, their relatives and any medical professionals involved in their care.

Points of contact like ours are essential lifelines to those in need of advice and support.

What I do is just one part of the service we deliver here at St Peter's, along with our Community Nurse Specialists and our Hospice at Home Team.

What's particularly special is that we do so much of our work in the community. We deliver over 90% of our care in patients' homes, where they feel most comfortable.

That's why the services we provide are so important. We believe that everyone in our community should be able to access hospice care.

So we're determined to bring the very best care to people where and when they need it most.

Nurse with patient

Last year we supported 2,985 patients and their families.

Mark

"I can't put into words how thankful I am to St Peter's for the care they provided."
Emma, wife of patient Mark

Mark had been diagnosed with terminal cancer, and his wish was to die at home. His wife Emma was absolutely amazing, supporting him throughout so he could stay at home, despite his tricky symptoms.

She called the Advice Line on many occasions, and we were able to talk her through ways to help keep him comfortable so that he could stay at home. Mark and Emma also received help from our Community Nurse Specialists. Emma said that without us everything would have been so much more complicated and distressing.

Yes, I want to give a gift to the Hospice teams so they can support people 365 days a year.

All our care and support is provided free of charge. It doesn't cost our patients or their families a single penny. Yet only 1 in 5 of our patients are funded by the NHS. For the other 4 patients we turn to you, our wonderful supporters. Without you, we wouldn't be able to reach as many patients and give them the care and support they deserve as they approach the end of their life.

£20 could help fund a nurse's time on our 24 hour Advice Line ensuring patients and their loved ones can access the help they need when they need it

£45 could help pay for our Hospice at Home team to provide hands on care to patients in the last few weeks of their life

£75 could go towards the cost of a Community Nurse Specialist to give bespoke advice and support to patients and their families

For Emma and Mark, and thousands more patients and families across Bristol and the surrounding area, we provide the care and reassurance they need at the most difficult times.

We were there for them because our supporters were there for us. Thank you.

Important Announcement: Light Up a Life Event on 7 December cancelled

Due to the storm predicted to arrive this weekend and the rare red weather warning issued by The Met Office across Bristol and the South West, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the event.

We know how important this event is for our community and we share your disappointment, but the safety of our patients and supporters is our highest priority.

If you have any questions or need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us via community@stpetershospice.org
