Meet our Management Team

St Peter's Hospice is managed day-to-day by our Executive Team, headed by our Chief Executive Officer.

Susan Hamilton, Chief Executive Officer

She has spent over 20 years in senior positions in the NHS, local government, and charity sector. Susan is also a Non-Executive Director and is currently on the boards of University Hospitals Bristol and Weston, and Taff Housing. She believes passionately in reducing health inequalities so that everyone gets the care they need.

In her spare time, Susan enjoys travelling with her family, walking and swimming, playing the violin in orchestras and occasionally attempting triathlons.

Sarah Allen-Gunn, Director of Fundraising and Communications

Sarah became Director of Fundraising and Communications in 2021. She had initially joined the Hospice in 2017 as Head of Fundraising, just ahead of the Room to Care Appeal – a capital appeal to raise the funds required to rebuild the Inpatient Unit at Brentry. Prior to that Sarah had worked in the charity sector for 10 years, much of that time at CLIC Sargent, and before that had worked in a variety of PR and marketing roles in the private sector.

Sarah's focus is on supporter experience and ensuring that everyone who is motivated to support the Hospice is supported in doing so and understands the difference they make. Sarah spends much of her free time enjoying the outdoors with her young family.

Chris Benson, Director of Patient Care

Chris trained with the Bristol and Weston School of Nursing, qualifying as a Registered Nurse in 1988. Since then she has spent most of her career working in palliative care, mainly with St Peter’s Hospice. She has worked as a Team Leader in the Inpatient Unit, a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the community, a Macmillan Nurse in a general hospital and as a Day Services Manager. She is also a qualified teacher and has worked as a teacher of palliative care for three years.

Chris is an Honorary Associate of the Foundation of Nursing Studies and is particularly interested in person-centred cultures of care. Chris became our Director of Patient Care in 2015, leading all patient care departments in delivering safe, high-quality services.

His most recent role was Head of UK Retail at Phase Eight, leading a team of 11 regional managers. John has also led teams across a number of successful retail businesses including Timberland, Oasis, Ann Summers, GAP and Harrods. John's approach is to create a confident team with a positive culture, working with them collaboratively to empower them to achieve great results.

John is focused on creating a difference in the charity retail sector, bringing his experience into the charity world, while also taking the opportunity to learn from experts within the sector. His focus is on driving income for the Hospice and looking for new business opportunities within the organisation.

Living in Devon, John loves walking in the countryside and by the sea, is a keen golfer and keeps fit mountain and road bike riding. He also enjoys a social beer and dinner with friends.
