44 Days

Fill them with light

When we or someone we love is dying, all we really want is more quality time with them, to make the most of what's left. Time well spent. We can't stop time. But we can make it matter and improve its quality.

44 days is the average amount of time someone spends with us at St Peter's Hospice, and it's our mission to fill those days with light. To manage pain, symptoms, and day to day admin, so that people with serious illnesses can focus on living during those last 44 days.

We're a charity, and we rely on your support to be able to do this.

44 days - fill them with light

"I really remember a sense of time slowing down, the days felt longer in a good way. It was quite ironic I think that time should slow down when time was running out – St Peter's gave us this for which I am so grateful."

Whilst some people will be with us for less time, and others far more, 44 days is the average amount of time someone spends under our care. When faced with the effects of an end-of-life illness, even the simplest things can be extremely challenging, when all you want to do is enjoy the most precious moments.

At St Peter's, we carry the load, so that people with serious illnesses can keep on living right up until death. We use our expert knowledge in palliative care to manage pain and symptoms, navigate complex paperwork, and help people get moving if they can. Leaving our patients and their loved ones to focus on making as many memories as possible, in the time that they have left.

With your support, we can take someone's darkest days and fill them with light.

The support worker would always call Karen, to make sure she could come in and have her morning and evening kiss with her husband. The support workers would joke, "It's time to pucker up for Karen". Karen said, "I'd look forward to that moment every day."

We exist to support everyone who needs us, within our region. But we currently reach just one third of the people who need our support. We want to close this gap, and we are working towards doubling the number of people we support in the next five years. Despite what lots of people think, hospice care is free for all. But we're a charity and we can only do what we do with the support of people like you.

Right now, patients come to us on average just 44 days before death. But we know that getting support earlier means better quality of life and better outcomes. We're working hard to increase the time that someone spends under our care from 44 days to a year. All by 2030. But this comes at a cost. And with only 20% of our costs covered by the NHS, we rely heavily on donations from our community.

Help us to bring light not just at the end, but for the journey.
