Therapy Team

Our Therapy Team

Our Occupational Therapists (OTs), Physiotherapists and Therapy Assistants are part of the multi-professional team at St Peter's Hospice. We see patients on the Inpatient Unit, at Day Hospice, at home or as outpatients.

We work with patients and their families setting goals, enabling people to remain as independent as possible, enhancing a sense of well-being and control. We emphasise the 'doing' rather than the 'being done to' and this can help restore a sense of purpose and confidence.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy aims to help maintain a patient's movement, function and independence. Our physiotherapists assess and agree a treatment plan according to individuals' needs. Physiotherapy can help with:

  • Maximising strength and mobility through exercise and rehabilitation
  • Assessing whether a patient would benefit from appropriate walking aids
  • Improving comfort through movement, positioning and use of a TENS machine (a small battery operated unit which reduces pain by stimulating sensory nerves)
  • Education of techniques to manage breathlessness.

Occupational Therapy

Activities of daily living (for example, dressing, cooking, and bathing) can all become increasingly challenging. Our Occupational Therapists work to develop coping strategies to be as comfortable and productive as possible. We encourage patients to set goals to maximise their functional abilities and quality of life, while adapting to their changing condition. Occupational Therapists can help with:

  • Advice to promote independence
  • Practical strategies to help families/carers support the patient at home
  • Providing equipment to aid independent living
  • Relaxation techniques to alleviate stress and anxiety
  • Techniques to cope with fatigue and loss of energy
