Professional End of Life Care Workshops

Caring for people that are dying, and supporting their families is of huge significance, and a part of many health and social care professionals' practise. These workshops are aimed at registered health and social care professionals to enhance knowledge and understanding of aspects of end of life care and application to practise.

Location

Sessions take place at St Peter's Hospice, Charlton Road, Brentry, BS10 6NL.

Cost

£50 per person, per workshop

Timings

Each session runs 13.30 - 16.30

Advance Care Planning (ACP)

Studies sadly indicate that people often receive end-of-life care that is inconsistent with their wishes, or their wishes are not known. This seminar aims to support a better understanding of advance care planning and its application to practise.

Course content

  • The impact of ACP

  • When and how to approach ACP conversations

  • Cultural and spiritual considerations

  • ACP documentation (including ReSPECT) and legal frameworks

Understanding the experience of grief and loss is significant in supporting individuals and families in end of life care.

This seminar aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the experience of grief and loss.

By the end of the seminar you will have:

  • explored a variety of grief and loss experiences

  • discussed models of grief and the application of such models

  • described approaches to compassionately support those experiencing loss and change

  • identified the potential of self-care and strategies to apply

Dementia

We are offing 2 seminars for those caring for people with dementia. If you have attended a Dementia at End of Life session with us in recent years, you may wish to attend part 2 only.

Dementia at End of Life - Part 1

This seminar is designed for all registered and non-registered health and social care staff. It will explore the unique challenges involved in supporting individuals with dementia as they approach the end of life.

The session will cover:

  • An overview of dementia and its most common types

  • How to recognise when a person with dementia is nearing end of life

  • Holistic approaches to managing symptoms and providing compassionate care

This session will focus on effective communication with individuals living with dementia and understanding the vital role of carers.

  • Considering the carer's perspective, including insights from someone with first-hand experience of caring for a person with dementia
