Our commitment
Every adult living with a progressive life-limiting illness should receive support to live well until the end of life, regardless of their age, disability, religion or belief, sex, race, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, and pregnancy and maternity. Every individual has a unique set of needs, and their care should reflect this.
Sadly, there are many barriers that may prevent people from underserved groups receiving the end-of-life care they need. St Peter's Hospice is committed to proactively trying to reduce these inequalities, by building collaborative services that reach all communities, and giving adults the support, comfort and dignity they need at the end of life.
What action is St Peter's Hospice taking to improve equity, diversity and inclusion?
We believe that:
- Everyone living with a life-limiting illness should have equal access to excellent palliative care
- Everyone working and volunteering for St Peter's Hospice should be treated fairly and with respect
- As an education provider to fellow care professionals, we have a responsibility to incorporate best practice into our training
- As the only adult Hospice provider in our area, we have a responsibility to reach out to underserved communities
We recognise that this is a journey. Every day, we are striving to deliver on those beliefs, both as an employer and service provider.
Some of our actions include:
- Launching a new policy internally with clear aims and intentions around ED&I
- An Equity, Diversity and Inclusion employee working group for service improvement, development and policy discussion, which meets every two months
- Let's Talk sessions that aim to generate conversation and raise awareness of diverse life experiences among employees
- A new accessibility toolbar, which allows users to get information from our website in the format they prefer – for example translated into their language, read aloud, or in a large format
- Becoming a 'Disability Confident Committed' employer
Some of our future plans include:
- Engaging key community leaders, audiences and health partners across Bristol to improve our understanding
- Providing specialist training for employees in patient-facing roles
- Progressing to becoming a 'Disability Confident Employer'
- Understanding the referrals process taken by our health partners, to ensure they know that our services are accessible to all

Is St Peter's Hospice a Christian or faith-based charity?
No. St Peter's Hospice is not affiliated to any particular faith; our approach is to support people of all faiths and none. The Hospice was named after St Peter's Hospital in the centre of Bristol, which was destroyed during the Blitz in 1940.
