Emma's story

Support Us

Emma turned to us when her husband Mark was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

"I can't put into words how thankful I am to St Peter's for the care they provided.

"Mark was diagnosed with a progressive and aggressive tumour in 2023, and we soon realised that the care he needed would be palliative. His only wish was that he could die at home. That's when St Peter's Hospice came into our lives.

"They were so kind, helpful and patient. I used the Advice Line a lot. If I had any questions or worries, that was my first port of call. I would ring up every day at one point during Mark's illness, and they would always be on hand to help me. They really helped me care for Mark. Any concerns or worries, I just phoned the Advice Line.

"And Sam, our Community Nurse Specialist, was there for vital support, particularly at the end of Mark's life. Sam and her team supported me the whole way through. There was one incident nearing the end of Mark's life, where the District Nurses needed to call the paramedics due to a fault with the equipment. Both Mark and I didn't want him to go into hospital, as he was too poorly to travel. Sam fought so hard for me to keep Mark at home.

"The Hospice at Home team were brilliant as well. They would stay with you for however long you needed them. They must have so many patients, but I never felt rushed.

"Mark died at home in August this year. I'm so glad he got his wish. St Peter's Hospice were with me every step of the way. They gave me the confidence to be able to do this for Mark, and I felt honoured to care and look after my husband at home."

For Emma and Mark, and thousands more patients and families across Bristol and the surrounding area, we provided the care and reassurance they needed at the most difficult times.

We were there for them because our supporters were there for us. If you can, please send us a donation this Christmas to help us continue our vital work. Thank you.
